Understanding Bow Torque

Nobody likes to talk about it, many of us are reluctant to admit it, but let us face it, poor hits on game animals happen every hunting season. These are times when joy, elation and triumph transform into a slow agony and heartfelt distress in a brief moment.

Did you know that many poorly hit bowshot animals are the result of a phenomena called bow hand torque or simply bow torque? What is bow hand torque? Bow torque is simply a misalignment of the bow riser’s twist axis, which places the bows riser and arrow rest out of square to the most efficient nock travel. This bow torque/twist absolutely affects the bows tune. It will result in fishtailing arrows and a high percentage of left and right misses. As bow hunters, we often find ourselves shooting from awkward and inconvenient positions such as twisted in a tree stand or standing on uneven terrain shooting extreme uphill or downhill angles where torque becomes problematic.

If you could provide a simple visual reference, allowing bow hunters to see and correct this phantom problem you would offer the hunter a tremendous advantage in the field. Some shooters mistakenly believe that the bubble level offers this solution but in fact, the level controls the bows cant axis or left and right lean. It is possible to square the bow and shoot from a tune position even with a left or right cant in the bow risers’ position. This is why many shooters will tell you they never look at their bubble and still shoot accurately.
